This qualification is designed for learners who want to strengthen and develop their English skills to help them gain greater benefits in work, education, and everyday life. By achieving this qualification, learners will demonstrate their ability to read, write, speak, listen, and communicate effectively in English. These essential skills can be confidently applied in both workplace settings and real-life situations across a range of purposes and environments.

Functional Skills qualifications are recommended for learners aged 14 and above and can be delivered in a variety of learning environments. The qualification can be studied as a stand-alone programme or as part of a wider learning pathway, such as an apprenticeship programme. Learners undertaking apprenticeships will normally need to successfully complete Functional Skills as part of their overall programme unless they are able to provide evidence of exemption.

This qualification can be completed through different teaching and learning methods, including classroom-based learning, online or distance learning, and embedded learning approaches, provided that the recommended learning hours are achieved. The guided learning hours (GLH) for this qualification are 55 hours; however, the actual teaching time may vary depending on the delivery method and the individual learning needs of each student.
