The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism – Tier 1

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism – Tier 1 is the Government’s preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff who require a general awareness of learning disability and autism.

This programme helps participants develop a better understanding of learning disability, autism, reasonable adjustments and inclusive practice, enabling them to communicate effectively and provide person-centred support within their role.

Please note: Learners must complete the NHS England Oliver McGowan e-learning (Part 1) before attending the live Tier 1 interactive session.

Course Content

This training covers:

  • Understanding learning disability
  • Understanding autism
  • The importance of reasonable adjustments
  • Effective communication and person-centred approaches
  • Promoting dignity, equality and inclusion
  • Understanding health inequalities
  • Reflecting on personal attitudes and behaviours
  • Learning from the lived experiences of autistic people and people with a learning disability

Duration: One-day online programme.

We deliver Tier 1 through:

  • Online delivery via Microsoft Teams
  • Interactive discussions and group activities
  • Experienced approved trainers
  • Learning informed by experts with lived experience
  • Opportunities for reflection and practical application

£25 per learner

Group bookings are available for employers and organisations.

There is no formal examination. Participants are expected to complete the required NHS England e-learning before attending and actively participate throughout the live interactive training.

Participants should:

  • Be aged 16 years or over
  • Complete the required NHS England e-learning before attending the live session
  • Be working in, or preparing to work in, a health or social care setting where Tier 1 training is appropriate

On successful completion, participants will:

  • Meet the Tier 1 requirements of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training framework appropriate to their role
  • Improve confidence when supporting autistic people and people with a learning disability
  • Develop more inclusive and person-centred professional practice

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism – Tier 2

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism – Tier 2 is designed for health and social care professionals who provide direct care and support to autistic people and people with a learning disability.

The programme develops the knowledge, skills and confidence required to deliver safe, effective and person-centred care while promoting inclusion, equality and positive outcomes.

Please note: Learners must complete the NHS England Oliver McGowan e-learning (Part 1) before attending the face-to-face Tier 2 training.

Course Content

This training covers:

  • Understanding learning disability and autism in greater depth
  • Recognising individual strengths, needs and preferences
  • Making reasonable adjustments to improve care and support
  • Effective communication strategies
  • Promoting person-centred care and positive outcomes
  • Understanding health inequalities and barriers to accessing services
  • Reflecting on professional practice
  • Learning directly from experts with lived experience through discussion and case-based activities

Duration: One-day face-to-face programme.

We deliver Tier 2 through:

  • Face-to-face classroom training
  • Interactive workshops and group discussions
  • Scenario-based learning and case studies
  • Co-delivery with approved trainers and experts with lived experience
  • Practical activities to support reflective learning

£90 per learner

Participants should:

  • Be aged 16 years or over
  • Complete the required NHS England e-learning before attending the training

Be working in a role that provides direct care or support to autistic people and/or people with a learning disability, or another role requiring Tier 2 training

On successful completion, participants will:

  • Meet the Tier 2 requirements of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training framework appropriate to their role
  • Apply best practice when supporting autistic people and people with a learning disability
  • Strengthen inclusive, person-centred care and professional practice
